According to tradition, you are supposed to kiss someone if you find yourself under the mistletoe with them at a holiday party. Unfortunately, neglecting your oral hygiene will lead to unsightly and foul-smelling accumulations of plaque, bacteria, and food debris that can make your breath as ghastly as the Ghost of Christmas Future. Here’s a quick look at the problems poor oral hygiene can cause as well as a few of the best ways to keep your breath fresh and pleasant.
What Are the Consequences of Poor Oral Hygiene?
Harmful bacteria and decaying food particles smell terrible, and neglecting to clean your mouth adequately every day will allow these to build up and lead to nasty oral infections. Problems poor oral hygiene can cause include:
- Foul breath
- Yellow teeth
- Cavities
- Gum disease (which can be transferred to another person through kissing)
- Agonizing toothaches
- Jawbone erosion
- Permanent tooth loss
While not directly related to poor oral cleaning habits, tobacco use is also an excellent way to increase your risk of these issues.
How Can I Keep My Breath Healthy and Fresh?
While you might want to reach for breath mints or sugary chewing gum to address bad breath, these methods will only cover up the problem without addressing its root causes. Luckily, you can maintain a clean mouth and prevent most oral infections by adhering to the following simple habits:
- Brushing your teeth at least twice a day using short, gentle, circular strokes.
- Flossing at least once a day, but it’s better to do it after every meal.
- Rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash. Look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval on the label.
- Chewing sugar-free gum after meals, snacks, and beverages other than water.
- Limiting your consumption of foods and beverages that are high in sugars, acids, starches, and alcohol.
- Eating a healthy diet full of vitamins, minerals, lean protein, complex carbs, and fiber.
- Seeing your dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings.
Don’t let poor oral care set you up for embarrassment when you find yourself under the mistletoe with that special someone. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best ways to keep your breath fresh and your mouth healthy.
